Community Partners Host First-Ever Sleep Out & Readathon in Milwaukee
Effort will bring together advocacy and education, passion for literacy and family fun
MILWAUKEE — Amani United members Christal and Jarvis West, alongside neighborhood partners and local organizations, are proud to present the first-ever Milwaukee Sleep Out & Readathon, taking place Friday, Sept. 19 at 5pm through Sunday, Sept. 21 at 7pm at 2444 N. 21st Street.
This community event brings together residents, leaders, and advocates to raise awareness about homelessness while celebrating the power of literacy. In honor of Jeanette Bryant and Brandon West, the weekend-long experience will combine education, advocacy, and family-friendly fun.
Event Highlights:
- Tent Tours – Explore six large-scale 10’ x 30’ rooms (Sept. 20–21, 12–7 PM)
- Community & Youth Yoga
- Scary Story Hour with S’mores
- Outdoor Family Movie Nights
- Open Sanctuary Room for prayer & serenity
- Live-Streamed Demonstrations (5-7pm) on cooking, wellness, domestic violence awareness, survival skills, men’s wellness and homelessness
- Free Food Boxes with dry goods and snacks provided by Feeding America
- First-Ever Non-Stop Readathon – Volunteers will read in 30–60 minute slots, sharing the love of literacy throughout the Sleep Out
“This is more than an event—it’s a movement,” said Christal West. “Together, we are uplifting literacy, addressing homelessness, and showing what’s possible when community comes together in love and action.”
The Sleep Out & Readathon is hosted by Christal and Jarvis West and presented in partnership with the Jarman Bryant Foundation, North Avenue Ambassadors, InPower LLC, Ald. Stamper, Ald. Jackson, Hope Lutheran Church, Dominican Center, Lucky Sam’s, all Amani United committees, Mission of Christ Lutheran Church, and Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin.
