Chairwoman Nicholson Plan to Expand Accessibility to County Board Meetings Adopted
MILWAUKEE – Today the County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted a plan to add multilingual captioning, notices, and agendas for County Board and standing committee meetings. The plan was set in motion by an amendment to the 2023 Milwaukee County Budget authored by Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson.
“In Milwaukee County, our diversity is our strength, and we must ensure language is not a barrier to being engaged with government,” said Chairwoman Nicholson. “As Chairwoman, I’ve made accessibility to our proceedings a top priority, and translating our meetings into multiple languages is our next step in advancing equity at the County Board.”
Milwaukee County’s Information Management Services Division (IMSD) recommended using software from Link Electronics for multilingual closed captioning. This software can translate speech with 95% accuracy.
Initial costs will be paid with previously allocated federal American Rescue Plan Act funds. Ongoing costs will be absorbed within IMSD’s annual budget.
Multilingual services are expected to be implemented by July 31.
