Celebrating Bisexual Awareness Week

Statement of Alderperson JoCasta Zamarripa September 16, 2025

Millions of people across the world are celebrating Bisexual Awareness Week (September 16 – September 23). I am proud to say that I am one of those bisexual individuals celebrating this important annual event, also known as #BiWeek.

Bisexual Awareness Week originated from Celebrate Bisexuality Day, which was initiated in 1999 to honor and raise awareness of bisexual individuals (CPHS). GLAAD and BiNet USA extended the duration of the event from one day to a week in 2014, providing additional time for education, celebration, and awareness-raising about the bisexual+ community (CovNetPres).

I have embraced the importance of #BiWeek in its mission of tackling biphobia, fighting against erasure, and informing the public about bisexual identities, histories, and experiences.

Importantly, Bisexual Awareness Week offers a focused opportunity for bisexual+ individuals to recount their experiences, honor their identities and successes, and cultivate community ties with allies.

Milwaukee has increasingly been an inclusive place for bisexual+ individuals, and I am proud of my city for making #BiWeek a time for celebration, understanding and awareness.
