Celebrate Women and Girls in Science at the King Community Center
Milwaukee, WI – Milwaukee County Parks is excited to announce Women and Girls in Science, a hands-on, open-house-style STEAM event taking place on Friday, February 7, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, located at 1531 W. Vliet Street in Milwaukee.
Hosted by Milwaukee County Parks and organized by the Wehr Nature Center staff, this free community event is designed to challenge outdated stereotypes about who can succeed in science and related fields. When many people picture a scientist, they still imagine a man in a white lab coat. Women and Girls in Science aims to change that narrative by highlighting the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) and by inspiring young people to see themselves in these roles.
Girls and boys alike will have the opportunity to “catch the science bug” through engaging, hands-on activities led by local women leaders working in a variety of STEAM professions. Participants will learn about influential female STEAM pioneers, explore scientific tools and concepts, and connect with potential mentors who are making an impact in their fields today.
This event is open to all, though it is especially recommended for individuals aged 10 and up. Admission is free; however, participants are kindly requested to pre-register to ensure a spot in this inspiring event.
“We’re excited to support an event that celebrates women in science while inspiring young people to imagine themselves in STEAM careers,” said Carly Hintz, Director of the Wehr Nature Center. “Opportunities like this help spark curiosity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.”
Participants will engage with more than 15-area businesses and nonprofits who are leading the way in innovation. Past attendees have shared:
“I learned about historical women in science I didn’t know existed.” “I am so impressed with all the time presenters spent explaining things to my girls.” “The event was hands-on. So much to do!” “This event pushed past all the stereotypes and showed women leading the field in their careers.”
Additionally, Wehr Nature Center expresses its profound gratitude to We Energies for their generous support, making this event possible.
Join us to discover that anyone can be a scientist and explore the endless possibilities within the realms of STEAM.
