Celebrate the season opener of the Fondy Farmers Market, Milwaukee’s premier urban, producer-only market, with music, dance, and the delicious smells of Fondy’s 5th Annual BBQ Cook-off on Saturday, June 23rd, 2012. Opening day festivities take place at the market from 7 am – 3 pm at 2200 W. Fond du Lac Avenue. Entertainment is provided between 9 am and 1 pm. The day’s festivities include a BBQ Cook-off, petting zoo, music, dance, more than 30 market vendors, and a variety of prepared foods for sale. The Opening Day Celebration is sponsored by The Spice House, Milwaukee. Free parking is provided in an adjacent lot.

A panel of celebrity judges including Kyle Cherek of Wisconsin Foodie will anoint Milwaukee’s BBQ king and queen during Fondy’s 5th Annual BBQ Cook-off. Residents compete against each other in two categories: pork ribs and chicken. Prizes are awarded to first and second place winners in each category. Judging takes place at 11 am and 12 pm.

Local jazz saxophonist Marcus Adams kicks off the celebration at 9 am with a performance of the National Anthem, followed by opening remarks by Young Kim, Fondy’s executive director, and Market sponsors. Between 9:30 am and 1 pm, a slate of musicians and dancers perform, including Marcus Adams and the Nefertari African Dance Company. Kids will enjoy a baby animal petting zoo (10 am – 1 pm), Yoga for Kids (10 am and 11 am), face painting, special Youth Booth activities, and more. All activities are free.

More than 30 market vendors will be present opening day, including Craigland Farms, Brehmer’s U-Pick, and Walnut Way Conservation Corp. (the only producer of honey in central city Milwaukee). Shoppers should come hungry for the home-made tasty treats they’ve been craving all winter, such as egg rolls and Thai soup.

“The addition of new sponsors to support the Market means that you will see lots of improvements to the 2012 Market, from a greater variety of music and programming to more extensive community outreach,” says Young Kim, Executive Director of the Fondy Food Center. “Also, 2012 marks the second year that our farmers have been farming at our 80-acre farm in Port Washington. Look for lots of strawberries throughout the year as several farmers planted ever-bearing strawberries, plus new varieties of produce requested by our customers. With our new sponsors and the enthusiasm and support of our Fondy community, 2012 is shaping up to be one of our best years ever.”
