An Exploration of the Body as Landscape On Display at Gallery 507

MILWAUKEE – The Bronzeville Center for the Arts (BCA) is excited to announce a new exhibition at Gallery 507, “Above, Below, Within,” featuring the performance-based work of interdisciplinary artist Ciarra K. Walters. The exhibition will be on view from March 26, 2026 to August 14, 2026, at 507 W. North Ave.

The public is invited to an opening reception on March 26 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., providing an early look at the installation and the artist’s meditative practice.

“Above, Below, Within” explores the body as a living, temporary sculpture. Based in Prince George’s County, Maryland, Walters embeds herself within natural and architectural landscapes—ranging from autumnal forests to sandy seascapes—to explore the communion between the spirit, the earth, and the skies. Her work often features color-coded uniforms representing the seven chakras, centering each performance on specific spiritual strengths.

“We are excited to launch the ‘Above, Below, Within’ exhibition that celebrates the body as a living sculpture and invites a profound sense of autonomy,” said Phoenix S. Brown, BCA Curator. “Ciarra’s exploration of new ways of being reveals movement as a form of care, resistance, and spiritual return.”

The exhibition features intuitive films captured across the U.S. and internationally. In the 2024 work “Me the Tree, Like My Mother Eileen,” Walters roots herself in a Maryland mountain forest, embodying a poem addressed to her late mother. Another featured work, “Blue Like Some Part of the Ocean” (2020), captures Walters maintaining a movement cycle despite the interruption of passing tourists, asserting a sense of persistence and control within an ever-changing environment.

As visitors move through the gallery toward a central performance platform, they are encouraged to consider how breath and repetition can facilitate inner transformation. Walters’ practice highlights the body as a powerful vessel, navigating themes of grief, emotional vulnerability, and endurance.

This marks the third exhibition for Gallery 507 and the BCA, which was founded to highlight, celebrate, and support art and artists of the African Diaspora and to build a welcoming, accessible cultural hub in the heart of Milwaukee’s historic Bronzeville neighborhood.

Gallery 507 is open to the public Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about the exhibition and the Bronzeville Center for the Arts, visit www.bcamke.org.
