MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Sculpture Milwaukee and the Bronzeville Center for the Arts (BCA) are pleased to announce their programming partnership to present monumental public art in Milwaukee’s historic Bronzeville district, located just north of downtown Milwaukee. The collaboration brings Sculpture Milwaukee’s internationally recognized outdoor exhibition program together with BCA’s dedication to celebrating African American art and Bronzeville’s legacy as a vibrant cultural and commercial hub.

On Nov. 12, Martine Syms, a celebrated new media artist who interrogates Black identity—and her own identity as a Black female artist—will debut four site-specific art installations along North Avenue in the heart of Bronzeville.

Since its founding in 2020, BCA has accelerated ongoing efforts to revitalize Bronzeville. BCA is currently developing plans for a major new African American art museum to be constructed at the corner of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Drive and North Avenue. During the planning, design, and construction phases of the new museum, BCA continues to pursue its mission to share the work of African American artists at Gallery 507, their public gallery and administrative offices, located at 507 W. North Ave.

“BCA’s mission is to elevate and celebrate the work of African American artists. Working with Martine Syms and collaborating with the team from Sculpture Milwaukee provides BCA with an opportunity to realize our mission. The public display of these works will be a powerful expression of our purpose to promote the work of African American creatives in Milwaukee’s historic Bronzeville neighborhood,” said Phoenix Brown, BCA curator.

“Since Sculpture Milwaukee was founded, the organization has benefitted from the support and counsel of other local arts organizations and acquired significant practical expertise in mounting public art in downtown Milwaukee and we are thrilled to put it to use in Bronzeville through our collaboration with BCA,” said John Riepenhoff, executive director of Sculpture Milwaukee.
