NOTRE DAME, Indiana – Carsen Brandt and Matt Caputo each scored hat tricks, but the Marquette University men’s lacrosse team fell 22-9 to No. 1 Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon at the Loftus Sports Center.

Caputo scored twice in the opening four minutes to give the Golden Eagles (1-2) an early 2-1 lead before the Fighting Irish (2-0) answered with 12 of the next 13 goals. Brandt and Will Foster tacked on goals at the end of the second quarter and ND led 13-5 at halftime.

Marquette was successful on 4-of-6 extra man opportunities on the day and played to a near draw at the faceoff dot with Adam Slager and Chandler Caster taking a majority of the draws. MU held ND All-American Will Lynch under .500 (9-of-19).

In addition to MU’s two players with hat tricks, attackman Nolan Rappis and Bobby O’Grady each had a pair of assists, while O’Grady scored once to push his career point total to 142. The native of Milton, Massachusetts passed Conor Gately (140 points; 2013-16) for second in MU history and trails just program-leader Ryan McNamara‘s 152.

Six players posted at least two goals for the Irish, led by hat tricks from Will Angrick and Jake Taylor. Notre Dame posted a 50-21 edge in shots and forced MU into a 14-of-21 mark on clear attempts.

NOTABLE:

  • Caputo also notched a hat trick against ND in 2024 while playing for Ohio State. Today marked his first in a MU uniform and sixth of his career.
  • O’Grady now has 11 goals and two assists for 13 points in four career games against the Irish. He scored four goals in each of MU’s previous two games against ND.
  • The two Midwestern Catholic institutions have played every season of MU’s existence except for the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign. ND won three one-goal decisions over MU in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and hosted the Golden Eagles in the first round of the 2017 NCAA tournament at Arlotta Stadium.
  • Notre Dame has won all 13 meetings in the series and is 8-0 against MU at home. The lone contest previously played inside the Loftus Center was a 21-10 ND win on Feb. 15, 2023.
  • A pair of MU players each posted three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers: close defenseman Ryan Kilcoyne and SSDM Peter Detwiler.
  • MU redshirt freshman goalie Jack Kask entered the game late in the third quarter for starter Lucas Lawas and made six saves in 16:44. He tied ND starter Thomas Ricciardelli for a game high in saves.
  • Notre Dame entered the 2025 campaign on the heels of back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2023 and 2024 with four members of the Tewaaraton Award Watch List in tow.

UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles return to Milwaukee to host Cleveland State on Saturday, Feb. 22 at noon Central time. Tickets for the event inside the seasonal dome are sold out but the game is broadcast live on FloCollege.
