MILWAUKEE – Following the approval of a December 2023 resolution to study the feasibility of integrating solar photovoltaic systems (solar panels) at the Marcia P. Coggs Health and Human Services Center parking lot, the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution to expand solar energy production at this facility during today’s monthly meeting. This initiative aims to fully offset the center’s electricity usage, advancing Milwaukee County’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson, the resolution’s lead sponsor, stated:

“By expanding solar energy production at the Marcia P. Coggs Health and Human Services Center, Milwaukee County is demonstrating our commitment to environmental stewardship and to addressing persistent health inequities and disparities. The transition to renewable energy reduces our dependence on non-renewable sources, decreases CO2 emissions, and generates significant long-term cost savings. These savings can be reinvested in essential County services, particularly those targeting underserved communities, advancing our pursuit of equity and a healthier, more sustainable future for all residents.”

Supervisor Shea, also a sponsor of the resolution, said:

“Less than 1% of the Milwaukee County’s total energy needs come from renewable sources, which is unacceptable. This resolution is a crucial step towards rectifying that. Authorizing a study for solar panel installation in the parking lot presents an excellent opportunity to embrace renewable energy. It’s time for Milwaukee County to catch up and lead by example in the transition to sustainable energy sources.”

The resolution proposes adding high-efficiency solar photovoltaic systems to the building’s roof and parking areas. Preliminary reports suggest these solar panels could generate approximately 632 megawatt hours of electricity, covering the electrical needs of the building when combined with rooftop panels.

The Director of Facilities Planning and Development, in collaboration with the Budget Director and Comptroller, will provide a detailed project cost estimate and funding recommendations, to be presented to the Board by September 2024.
