Baldwin Calls on Trump to Prioritize U.s. Workers and Shipbuilders and Not Send U.s. Jobs to South Korea
Prior to U.S.-South Korea meeting, Baldwin called on Trump to ensure any deal puts American workers first
WISCONSIN – Today, U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) called on President Trump to prioritize American shipbuilding and American workers after the President announced the U.S. would buy South Korean ships in his meeting this week with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung. In the lead up to President Trump’s meeting with President Lee Jae Myung, Baldwin called on President Trump to secure a firm commitment that South Korea’s investment in the shipbuilding industry will directly benefit American workers. Baldwin, a longtime advocate of boosting the American shipbuilding industry, was at Fincantieri Ace Marine this week to stand with workers and unions to keep pushing for investment in American made ships to stand up to China, ensure American safety, and create and support good-paying jobs.
“I am deeply concerned by recent reports that indicate the Trump Administration is looking to have U.S. ships made overseas in South Korea,” said Senator Baldwin. “We need to see the details of this agreement because at the end of the day, America cannot compromise here – we are already losing to China and we have no time to waste. We must be firm on our commitment to supporting our maritime workforce, keeping our country safe, and revitalizing America’s shipbuilding capacity. I have long fought to strengthen our shipbuilding industry, and it can’t be done with shortcuts or quick fixes. The President must prioritize American workers by investing in our shipbuilding industry here at home and buying American-made ships.”
Senator Baldwin has been leading the charge to support the American shipbuilding industry and level the playing field for Wisconsin workers. Baldwin successfully got the United States to penalize China for its unfair trade practices in the shipbuilding industry that undermine American workers. The penalties come as a result of the investigation Baldwin backed that began under the Biden Administration into China’s maritime, logistics, and shipbuilding sectors.
Baldwin and a group of bipartisan colleagues also lead the Shipbuilding and Harbor Infrastructure for Prosperity and Security (SHIPS) for America Act, comprehensive legislation to revitalize the United States shipbuilding and commercial maritime industries. Senator Baldwin also fought to advance her American Made Navy Act in the annual defense legislation, which would ensure by 2033 any new Navy ship purchased uses 100% domestically produced materials, like propulsion systems, shipboard components, couplings, shafts, support bearings, and more.
