Alderwoman Andrea Pratt is inviting the community to take part in tomorrow’s Wisconsin Sickle Cell Summit at the Baird Center, and Saturday’s Walk to Break the Sickle Cycle at Dineen Park, 6901 W. Vienna Ave.

The summit will start at 9 a.m. tomorrow (Thursday, September 4) at the Baird Center downtown (use the entrance at Kilbourn and N. Vel R. Phillips Ave.) and the walk will start at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 6 (Dineen Park – 69th and Vienna).

Participants can go to www.sicklecellmke.org to register for both events.

Alderwoman Pratt, whose 1st Aldermanic District has the highest number of individuals living with SCD in the City of Milwaukee, said she is a proud sponsor of the events, which are presented by Sickle Cell Warriors of Wisconsin.

“I encourage community members to take part in these important events, and to stand alongside those battling Sickle Cell Disease, and show them they are supported and that they are not alone,” Alderwoman Pratt said. “By attending the summit and taking part in the walk, people can also help spread the word and educate others about Sickle Cell Disease and its impact on our community.”

Sickle Cell Disease is a genetic condition in which red blood cells that “become rigid and deform into a crescent or sickle shape” die early, lodge themselves in small blood vessels, restrict blood flow, and contribute to complications like “anemia, acute and chronic pain, infections, pneumonia and acute chest syndrome, stroke, and kidney, liver, and heart disease,” according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
