Ald. Coggs introduces legislation aimed at creating new development policy

Would require any development or business downtown requesting City assistance to invest in surrounding area

Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs has introduced new legislation that would direct the Department of City Development to assist in developing a policy that requires any development or business downtown that requests City assistance to invest in the surrounding neighborhoods and community. Alderwoman Coggs believes such a policy would be beneficial given the continued development downtown in recent years and the impact it has had citywide.

“Having a strong, vibrant and healthy downtown is important, but our city as a whole is only as strong as our neighborhoods, and this legislation starts us down the path of creating more equity so that projects focused in the downtown area can be felt throughout Milwaukee,” said Alderwoman Coggs. “The discussion around the Milwaukee Tool project underscored that we should be having conversations about the inclusivity of major projects as early as possible so that the greatest impact can be created and generated from the onset. I look forward to working with the department, my colleagues and other stakeholders as we work to set a high standard for these developments moving forward.”

The file, co-sponsored by Alderwoman Nikiya Dodd, Alderwoman Chantia Lewis, Alderman Khalif J. Rainey and Alderman Ashanti Hamilton, will be heard and discussed in greater detail at a future Common Council committee meeting.
