The rapid expansion of Milwaukee’s breweries in the decades after the Civil War brought prosperity to the owners of the great shipping breweries and steady work to their employees. Both groups contributed to the development of Milwaukee’s economy and society. However, Milwaukee’s breweries were not immune from the labor disputes that afflicted other businesses in the Cream City and throughout the nation.
