Clark Calls for Halt to Line 5 Following Spill

BAYFIELD – Today Fred Clark, Candidate for Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District, called on the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to halt construction on Enbridge Line 5 following a natural gas leak this morning in Iron County, Wisconsin.

On Tuesday, August 25th an accident at an active portion of Line 5 resulted in release of natural gas liquids. In two prior incidents within the last 30 days, drilling frack outs resulted in the release of drilling fluids into waterways.

“I’m calling on the Wisconsin DNR to intervene and call a halt to continued construction work on the Line 5 reroute until a thorough review of Enbridge’s construction methods and safety protocols can be conducted.

Based on these incidents it’s clear that Enbridge does not have all of the details right when it comes to ensuring that this project can be executed safely.

When these types of mistakes happen the risks are far too high for our environment, the Bad River watershed, and for neighboring communities.”
