Senator Habush Sinykin Reaffirms Her Commitment to the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program
GRAFTON, Wis. – Today, Senator Jodi Habush Sinykin (D-Whitefish Bay), together with local advocates and community leaders, spoke to the media about the imminent funding cliff facing the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program and the effects on Wisconsin’s conservation commitment. For more than three decades, this program has protected vital wildlife habitat, supported our state parks and trails, and expanded popular outdoor recreation opportunities—in all of Wisconsin’s 72 counties. Over the years, the Knowles-Nelson program has protected more than 750,000 acres, including properties like Lion’s Den Gorge Nature Preserve in Ozaukee County.
Yet, on June 30, 2026, the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program is due to expire, as a consequence of the Republican-Majority’s decision to strip funding for this program from the state budget and subsequent failure to pass legislation reinstating funding needed for the program’s continuity.
Senator Habush Sinykin released the following statement:
“The support and popularity of the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program is undeniable. An overwhelming 93% of Wisconsinites support public dollars used for conservation, as we recognize the economic and quality of life benefits these special outdoor spaces provide our communities and families. And yet, this broadly popular program is set to expire tomorrow, June 30 due to partisan politics. Unfortunately, time and again throughout this past legislative session, Republican Leadership has demonstrated they are not committed to maintaining a viable Knowles-Nelson Program.
“Actions speak louder than words. If the people of Wisconsin wish to see Knowles Nelson Stewardship program continue going forward, we need legislators in charge who value the program and its continuity.
“The Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program will most likely remain dormant until the next budget is finalized in 2027. But I am committed to seeing this program pass in next year’s state budget with leaders who also believe in the value of stewardship. Where there is a will, there is a way, and I am confident that we can come together next year and get this done.”
