Old German Beer Hall Raises a Stein to 510 Years of German Beer
[Milwaukee, WI] Old German Beer Hall joins beer enthusiasts around the globe on Thursday, April 23 to celebrate German Beer Day (Tag des Deutschen Bieres), marking the 510th anniversary of the Reinheitsgebot, the legendary German Beer Purity Law. Established on April 23, 1516, in Ingolstadt by Duke Wilhelm IV of Bavaria, the Reinheitsgebot is recognized as one of the world’s oldest consumer protection laws. The original decree famously mandated that beer could only be brewed using three natural ingredients: water, barley, and hops. Yeast, though essential to the fermentation process, was added to the official list later in 1906 once its biological role was scientifically understood.
“The Reinheitsgebot isn’t just a set of rules; it’s a commitment to quality and craftsmanship that has defined German Beer as the global standard for brewing excellence.” says Hans Weissgerber III, Proprietor at Old German Beer Hall. “The Hofbräu Munich beer that we serve is brewed in Munich in strict adherence to this five centuries old royal proclamation. It’s a real point of pride and people can taste the difference in every stein we pour.”
Celebrating with the 2026 Hofbräu Maibock Anstich – Keg Tapping
German Beer Day coincides with the arrival of the 2026 Hofbräu Maibock. Old German Beer Hall will mark the occasion of German Beer Day at 6pm on Thursday, April 23. There will be live music, a reading of the Reinheitsgebot, followed by the tapping of a wooden keg with free Hofbräu Maibock while it lasts. This amber bock beer was first brewed in 1614, making it the oldest bock beer in Munich. Today, Hofbräu Maibock is still produced using a 400-year-old formula with an ABV of 7.2%. By tradition, the first barrel of the season is tapped at the Hofbräuhaus am Platzl in Munich during the last week of April, signaling the start of the “merry month of May”
