Statement on International Transgender Day of Visibility
From Alderperson JoCasta Zamarripa, Alderman Peter Burgelis, and The HIVE Employee Resource Group
Today, we proudly celebrate International Transgender Day of Visibility in the City of Milwaukee. This day embraces the vision we have of what Milwaukee is and can be as we recognize and elevate transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse individuals in Milwaukee.
Despite growing representation and legal advancements, transgender people still face significant challenges and backlash against the progress that has been made. We stand firmly with them in defense of their existence, and in celebration of their lives and achievements.
We fully recognize that discrimination, misinformation, poverty, and violence continue to disproportionately impact transgender and non-binary communities locally and worldwide, and while we celebrate those who can live openly, we also acknowledge and celebrate those who may not want to or feel safe to be visible. We will continue to raise awareness of discrimination and will never stop pushing for equal rights in Milwaukee and beyond.
We must continue supporting the rights of every resident to live as their authentic self, and to move through our communities free from prejudice, discrimination and stigma, especially amid nationwide attacks on the LGBTQ+ community generally, and transgender people in particular. In the City of Milwaukee, we believe in fostering a workplace and community where everyone is valued, respected, and supported. The Milwaukee we work to create is one where all residents move through their workplaces, schools, and communities as their full selves without the threat of bullying, violence, or stigma, and where all residents’ lives are valued and celebrated for their unique contribution to the fabric of our City. As allies, advocacy must be more than a one-time statement—it must include consistent, sustained support and action. That means standing against hate, misinformation, and policies that harm transgender and non-binary people wherever they are found while amplifying transgender, non-binary, and gender diverse voices and experiences.
