QUEENS, N.Y. – Leading by one with 22 seconds remaining, Marquette needed one defensive stop and got it, defeating St. John’s 56-55 in a tightly contested game on Wednesday night at Carnesecca Arena. It was just the second win of the year for MU when scoring less than 67 points.

Skylar Forbes (12) and Lee Volker (11) led the Golden Eagles in scoring with each reaching double figures.

Close throughout the opening quarter, Marquette never trailed in the first 10 minutes. Following a triple from Jordan Meulemans with two minutes remaining in the period, the Golden Eagles led by four. St. John’s scored the next eight, beginning the second quarter with a 6-0 run before a strong layup from Jaidynn Mason broke the drought. The bucket was the 1,000th point of Mason’s career as the senior entered the night with 999.

MU then regained the lead on a triple in transition from Forbes that made the score 26-25 with 3:47 left in the half. The Red Storm came back with five of their own and took a three-point lead into the half.

Following a 6-0 run by St. John’s midway through the third, a timeout with 6:20 on the clock form Cara Consuegra settled her team down. The Golden Eagles finished the quarter with an 8-2 stretch to pull to 40-39 with 10 minutes remaining.

The Red Storm jumped back out to a four-point lead two minutes into the fourth following a 3-pointer from Brooke Moore. Attacking the paint, MU scored six straight to grab the lead with 6:27 to play, its first lead in 17 minutes. After St. John’s tied up the game Marquette continued its run with buckets inside from Halle Vice and Volker with four minutes left. They were MU’s last buckets for the remainder of the game.

After St. John’s tied up the game at 55-55 and got a defensive stop, Olivia Porter pulled down a rebound with the Red Storm looking to take the lead. Fouled with 22 seconds on the clock, the senior split a pair to put the Golden Eagles up one.
