The effort to unionize continues, and our support for Discovery World workers stands strong
Statement of Milwaukee Common Council Members: Alderman Alex Brower, Alderperson JoCasta Zamarripa, and Alderman Robert J. Bauman
As workers at Discovery World push forward in their effort to form a union with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, or IAM Union, we remain 100% supportive and stand with them in solidarity.
The workers at Discovery World bring creativity and passion to almost every facet of the interactive science museum’s exhibits, special events, and education and outreach programs. Parents who have enjoyed Discovery World with their kids, and visitors who have attended events or who have just wandered through its spaces know how valuable and essential the workers are. Without their labor and dedication on a daily basis, Discovery World just isn’t the great destination that we know it to be.Discovery World management can recognize their workers’ chosen union representatives (the IAM Union) whenever they want, yet workers say management is continuing to subject them to anti-worker propaganda, coercion, and intimidation. We are asking Discovery World’s leadership to recognize the workers’ union and accept their demands for better working conditions and better treatment.
Here’s what the workers are asking for:
· Respect, and a voice in their workplace
· Fair wages
· The establishment of a clear path toward career advancement
· Reinstating Elijah Ewing-Scurlock, a worker who was fired for his organizing efforts
These demands should not be a heavy lift, and we believe the workers at Discovery World deserve to have their unionization efforts placed on a path to recognition by management as soon as is possible.NOTE: This press release was submitted to Urban Milwaukee and was not written by an Urban Milwaukee writer.
