WBB Heads to Minneapolis for First Road Test
Golden Eagles and Golden Gophers face one another for the first time since 1997.
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women’s basketball team will continue its Big Ten swing on Tuesday night, traveling to Minneapolis to face Minnesota at Williams Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. CT and will stream on B1G+.
THE STARTING FIVE
- Marquette is coming off a late-game comeback win over Wisconsin in the first meeting between the programs since 2017. MU erased an eight-point deficit in the final three minutes, eventually wining 65-62 in overtime. It was the program’ first overtime win since 2022.
- With 19 points in the season opener, Skylar Forbes was held to just one point through three quarters on Saturday. The junior finished with 19 points, and scored or assisted on 22 of MU’s final 28 points in the win.
- With Saturday’s win over Wisconsin, Marquette moved to 4-1 against the Big Ten since the 2021-22 season. The previous three wins had come over Illinois, Purdue and Rutgers.
- Marquette and Minnesota have met just eight times in their history, splitting the games at 4-4. All eight contests were played between 1990-97. MU one the final two meetings in 1996 (75-62 on Dec. 6, 1996 in Minneapolis) and 1997 (67-57 on Dec. 2, 1997 in Milwaukee).
- Marquette’s strength this season comes in its experience and continuity as the program is the only one in Division I women’s college basketball to return all of its players from the 2024-25 season.
9.9 – In eight games between Marquette and Minnesota, 9.9 as been the average margin of victory. While most games have been close, three have been decided by 13 or more points with MU going 2-1 in those games.
30 – Scoring just 35 points during the first 30 minutes of Saturday’s game against Wisconsin, Marquette finished the game by scoring 30 points in the final 15 minutes (4th quarter/overtime).
11.5 -With a style of getting out and running, Marquette has taken advantage of its opponents thus far on the break. MU is outscoring its opponents by 11.5 points per game on fast break points.
FLASHING BACK – GAME 2 vs. WISCONSIN
- Marquette has won four straight games over Wisconsin dating back to Dec. 6, 2015.
- MU tied up the all-time series at 13-13 and moved 7-5 all-time at home against Wisconsin.
- While the win was Cara Consuegra‘s first as a head coach against Wisconsin, it moved her all-time record (player, DOBO, assistant coach) to 15-4 against the Badgers.
- First-year assistant coach Sam Logic also earned her first win as coach over the Badgers. The former Iowa standout was a 7-0 against Wisconsin during her playing career.
- Marquette won its first overtime game since defeating DePaul 88-85 on Jan. 12, 2022.
- MU used a 10-0 run with less than three minutes remaining in regulation to erase an eight-point deficit.
- Skylar Forbes scored eight of those 10 points, and assisted on the other two.
- The junior scored or assisted on 22 of MU’s final 28 points, including scoring all six in the overtime period.
- During the Golden Eagles’ 10-0 run to take its first lead since the opening period, Jaidynn Mason produced a stretch of three straight stops with two blocks followed by a steal.
- Narrowly missing her second consecutive double-double, Halle Vice recorded eight points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
- While Forbes (19) and Mason (11) were in double figures for the second time this season, Lee Volker posted her first with 12 points.
GOLDEN EAGLES AGAINST THE BIG TEN
While Marquette is just 37-55 all-time against the Big Ten, the Golden Eagles have looked to turn the tide in recent seasons. Heading into this year, MU is 3-1 against Big Ten opponents since 2021-22.
- Two Big Ten opponents were on the schedule heading into this year, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
THEY’RE ALL BACK…WITH ADDITIONS
With fifth years awarded to Abbey Cracknell and Lee Volker, Marquette heads into the 2025-26 season as the only Division I women’s basketball team to return every player from its 2024-25 roster.
- Of the returners, two are fifth years, six are seniors and five are juniors.
- Additionally, MU added three players in transfer Jordan Muelemens and freshmen JJ Barnes and Kam Herring.
On Oct. 30, Marquette’s Skylar Forbes was selected to the 2025-26 Jersey Mike’s Naismith Trophy Women’s College Player of the Year Watch List, presented by AXIA Time. The 6-foot-3 junior forward was one of 50 student-athletes named to the watch list.
- Of the 50 players on the watch list, Forbes is just one of five from outside the Power 4.
