Souls to the Polls, Faith Leaders, and Community Partners Host a Free Breakfast to Inform and Inspire Milwaukeeans to Understand How the Latest Tax Bill Will Affect Us!
Over 300 people will gather to discuss how we can move forward together to protect our most vulnerable residents who are about to feel real pain as the federal government’s latest tax bill takes effect.
MILWAUKEE, WI—After the passage of the latest tax bill in Washington, Souls to the Polls coordinated the nonpartisan “Fight For Our Lives” Coalition made up of grassroots leaders, faith-based, youth, and community organizations that must stand up to fight against the policy changes that threaten our health and economic survival.
On the importance of the impact of the tax bill, Reverend Greg Lewis, Executive Director of Souls to the Polls said, “This is the FIGHT of our lives!” Lewis continued, “Harm is going to be inflicted on the least among us. Healthcare, housing, education and so much more is at stake. Our seniors are going to lose their healthcare, our poorest are going to lose what little resources they currently have, and we must not stand by and watch it happen. We are going to organize, we are going to stand up, we are going to use our power to fight for policies that will enable all communities to thrive.”
At the breakfast, Milwaukee clergy, community members, activists, faith and student leaders will talk about why our response to this legislation is crucial. Attendees will have the opportunity to strategize on how we can press our elected leaders to protect the resources that are available for the necessities of life. We will discuss how faith and community groups can work together to build awareness, engagement, and take action in this “fight of our lives.” We must strengthen the power of underrepresented and disenfranchised groups including Black and Brown, ALL low-income residents including senior citizens and our students. This diverse coalition must hold the line against attacks on Wisconsinites’ freedoms, and send a message that we must not stand by as those in power devastate our communities.
