Today the Finance and Personnel Committee recommended approval of file #250779 – an ordinance relating to the suspension of permit fees for projects related to the repair of flood damage. The file, sponsored by Alderman Lamont Westmoreland and Alderman DiAndre Jackson, authorizes the commissioner of neighborhood services to temporarily suspend permit fees associated with the repair of HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems in residential properties damaged by the August 9 and August 10, 2025 flood event. The file now goes before the full Common Council for adoption during its next meeting on Tuesday, September 23.

“The August storms and flooding were a disaster that impacted many within our community, and this is one small way in which we can support residents who are continuing to rebuild in the wake of all the damage they suffered,” said Alderman Westmoreland.

“Those who suffered flood-related damage to their homes are already paying a hefty price, and the city being able to lighten the burden even a little is something we should do in the name of supporting those in need,” added Alderman Jackson.

The suspension of permit fees may apply to the repair or replacement of items such as furnaces, electric heaters, sump pumps, transformers, water heaters, and more. The suspension of permit fees by the commissioner shall only apply to owner-occupied residential properties. The commissioner of neighborhood services may reimburse any permit fees paid to the Department of Neighborhood Services prior to the passage of this ordinance for applicable project work.
