Best Place at the Pabst Honored With Prestigious Historic Preservation Grant
Best Place at the Historic Pabst Brewery, 917 W. Juneau Ave., is receiving a $50,000 grant as part of the American Express and the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Backing Historic Small Restaurants grant program, Alderman Robert Bauman said today.
Alderman Bauman, chair of the Historic Preservation Commission, said Best Place is one of just 50 small or independently owned restaurants across the country to receive the Backing Historic Small Restaurants grant.
“Just a few years ago, there were some who wanted to bulldoze the historic building that houses the iconic Best Place at the Historic Pabst Brewery – a structure steeped in Milwaukee’s brewing history,” Alderman Bauman said.
“I want to congratulate owner Jim Haertel on receiving this prestigious grant and for all of the work he has put in over the course of more than 20 years to polish the gem that is Best Place,” said the Alderman, whose 4th Aldermanic District includes the Best Place property.
In its fifth year, the Backing Historic Small Restaurants grant program is supporting 50 small or independently owned restaurants across the country that contribute to their neighborhood’s unique history and identity, and each will receive $50,000 in funding to help them improve their businesses and positively impact their communities.
Since its inception, the Backing Historic Small Restaurants program has helped preserve America’s culinary heritage and beloved neighborhood buildings by awarding more than $8 million in grants to 180 historic small restaurants across all 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
