WSOC Faces Panthers & Badgers This Week

Golden Eagles looking for first 3-0 start since 2020-21

By - Aug 19th, 2025 04:24 pm

The Marquette University women’s soccer team (2-0-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) continues its 2025 campaign this week with a pair of matchups against in-state opponents.

The Golden Eagles will travel across town to Milwaukee on Thursday, Aug. 21 at 7:30 p.m. CT before hosting No. 23 Wisconsin at 6 p.m. CT on Sunday, Aug. 24.

MU Opens With Pair Of Shutouts

Marquette is 2-0 to start the season for the first time since the 2020-21 Covid campaign (opened year 3-0), which was played in the Spring.

Valparaiso transfer Hailey Wade made five combined saves in a pair of shutouts and now owns three blank sheets for her career.

Marquette’s defensive unit allowed a total of just 13 shots in the first two outings and just six of those were on goal.

Freshmen Earn BIG EAST Honors

Freshmen defenders Meg Decker and Clare Shea were both named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for their respective efforts in the opening week of the campaign.

The duo, which played every minute on the back line against NIU and NDSU, helped MU post a pair of shutouts and limit scoring opportunities by the opposing teams.

Ruhland Patiently Waited For Goal

Senior Abby Ruhland began the season with just four career appearances for the Golden Eagles after missing the entire 2023 and 2024 campaigns due to injury.

She returned to the pitch as a reserve in the season opener and followed that up with her first-career goal in the 2-0 victory over NDSU on Aug. 17, heading home a service from Emily Fix.

Christianson Happy To Assist

Junior forward Haley Christianson led the team in assists (5) in 2024 and finished second on the squad in points (7), netting her first-career goal in the season finale against Seton Hall.

The Kenosha, Wisconsin, native finished eighth in the BIG EAST in assists and ninth in assists per match.

MU Facing Familiar Opponents

The Golden Eagles are familiar with both of this week’s opponents, Milwaukee and nationally ranked Wisconsin.

The Golden Eagles and Panthers have participated in a home-and-home series for most of the past 30 years.

MU is looking for its first win over the Badgers since 2005 and first victory over a top-25 team since downing No. 25 Notre Dame on Nov. 2, 2012.
