MADISON, WI – Today, Representative Shelia Stubbs joined WAVE Educational Fund, stakeholders, and constituents at their Day of Action at the State Capitol. Representative Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) released the following statement:

“Today I joined WAVE Educational Fund, community partners, and advocates from across the state for their Day of Action at our State Capitol. As a member of the Gun Safety Coalition and a legislator who has consistently advocated for years for common-sense legislation to reduce violence and keep our communities safe, it was my honor to join them for their press conference to draw attention to the critical public safety threat that gun violence poses to our communities.

For years I have introduced bills to create the Office of Violence Prevention, a waiting period on the purchase of handguns, universal background checks, and safe storage. I will continue introducing this legislation because the health of our children, families, and communities is at stake.

When we respond to violence in the community, it’s not just about the seconds after a gun goes off; it’s about the days and weeks and months that follow. It’s about how we show up for our neighbors who have been impacted, how we get them the help they need, how we move forward together after an act of violence.

Public safety means healthy schools, jobs, and places where kids feel protected. Community leaders and outreach workers are already doing the work to make safer communities a reality. The state needs to meet them halfway.

If we want fewer shootings, we need to get at what causes them in the first place. We need to invest in stronger communities. We need to invest in mental health. We need to invest in common-sense measures that ensure safe, responsible gun ownership.

Now is the time to take action. Now is the time to do what is right for our state. Now is the time to come together as legislators, advocates, and community leaders and enact policy that guarantees the safety of our future generations.

Not doing anything is still a decision, and it’s costing lives. In the immortal words of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., ‘The time is always right to do what is right.’”
