MLAX Falls to No. 14 Georgetown in Double Overtime, 10-9

MILWAUKEE – Junior Lucas Lawas made a career-high 17 saves, but the Marquette University men’s lacrosse team fell to No. 14 Georgetown, 10-9, in double overtime on Saturday afternoon at Valley Fields.

“I thought it was an amazing environment,” first-year MU head coach Jake Richard said. “We put ourselves in great position early on in the year and what else do you want than Georgetown coming to town with an opportunity to find out what we’re about. We learned a lot about ourselves today in a lot of positive ways, I think.

“I’m really proud of the team’s fight and the pride that they play with. They’re playing for Marquette and they’re playing for each other. You saw that the entire length of the game. I’m just a really proud coach right now and really excited to get back to work for the rest of the season.”

The Golden Eagles (6-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) led by two at the half and scored the final two goals of regulation to send the game to overtime, where Georgetown’s Aidan Carroll’s fifth goal proved to be the difference.

Lawas made a save in each extra period but the Hoyas out-shot MU 6-2 in 7:36 of extra time. The MU defense once again held the Golden Eagles in contention late in the game by allowing just one score in the final 18:54 of regulation.

“Lucas was an absolute warrior today,” Richard said. “With him playing like the way he is, he puts us in position to win the game every week. If you look at our defense we have no superstars out there, they are just playing together as a great unit.”

MU’s two shots in overtime both came in the second period as the Marquette offense was held without a shot in the first period with a pair of turnovers.

Bobby O’Grady and Matt Caputo each tallied hat tricks for the Golden Eagles, while Jack Ransom added one for the Hoyas (7-3, 2-0 BIG EAST) in addition to Carroll’s five tallies.

NOTABLE:

• Marquette is 5-10 all-time against Georgetown, which has won each of the last seven meetings. MU had won four-straight contests in the series from 2016-19.
• Eight games in the all-time series have been decided by just one goal, including four of the five meetings at Valley Fields. Three of the games at Valley Fields have been decided in overtime.
• Lawas has made 32 saves against the Hoyas in his career in two overtime losses.
• Lawas’ previous career best of 16 saves came in an overtime win at Utah on March 15.
• All four of MU’s losses this season have come to team’s ranked in the top 15 of the USILA Coaches’ Poll.
