Representative Shelia Stubbs Applauds State of the Tribes Address
MADISON, WI – Today, the Wisconsin State Legislature convened for the State of the Tribes, with Chairman Thomas Fowler of the St. Croix Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin delivering the annual address. Representative Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) released the following statement:
Chairman Fowler’s speech emphasized the legislature’s continued responsibility to support and advocate for the self-determination, dignity, and wellbeing of Wisconsin’s tribal nations.
The diverse tribes of our state have continued to survive and thrive in spite of the many hardships imposed by colonization and discrimination over hundreds of years. However, tribal communities still face numerous challenges.
Chairman Fowler implored us as legislators to take seriously our collective responsibility to one another, declaring that when we support each other, we build a stronger Wisconsin for all. He expressed the need for more support for tribal universities and celebrating the educational achievements of tribal youth, including allowing them to wear their traditional regalia to graduation ceremonies.
He also stressed the importance of protecting our environment by increasing water quality standards, combatting the opioid crisis by expanding mental health resources and access to medical marijuana, and improving supports for a cohesive tribal police response, especially relating to the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous relatives. I look forward to continuing to partner with Indigenous advocates and leadership to prevent further cases of missing and murdered Indigenous women and relatives. Let us say her name!
