Wisconsin Democrats Blast Donald Trump’s Illegal Funding Freeze
MADISON, Wis. — After Donald Trump announced he would freeze federal funding on Tuesday, Democrats across Wisconsin are making it known that they will not stand by and watch while Donald Trump abuses his power and cuts off support for Wisconsinites.
Donald Trump’s unprecedented freeze on federal grants and loans could have devastating impacts on Wisconsin families that rely on programs like Head Start, Medicaid, and Meals on Wheels. Already, states were thrown into turmoil when Medicaid portals shut down nationwide as a result of Trump’s order—including here in Wisconsin. But while Donald Trump plays games with American’s lives, Wisconsin Democrats like Gov. Tony Evers and Sen. Tammy Baldwin are fighting to stop Republicans from ripping away health care and letting seniors and kids go hungry.

Gov. Tony Evers: “This was a sweeping, reckless decision that has caused unnecessary chaos and panic in Wisconsin and across our country. Wisconsin’s kids, families, veterans, law enforcement, seniors, and Wisconsinites in every corner of our state depend upon our federal tax dollars to support basic, everyday needs and services. I cannot accept that Wisconsin families, communities, and local programs may have the rug yanked out from under them, and I will do everything I can to stop that from happening.”
Sen. Tammy Baldwin: “This cuts funding for cops and firefighters, lunch for kids, combatting the fentanyl crisis, aid for farmers, and so much more. This is illegal, wrong, and will hurt Wisconsin families and businesses. I will not stand idly by.”
Attorney General Josh Kaul: “The Trump administration’s freeze of vital funding—apparently including funding for law enforcement, victim services, health programs, infrastructure, education, and much, much more—has already resulted in widespread uncertainty and confusion. This misguided and unlawful policy must be blocked before it leads to substantial harm to services and programs that are critical for Wisconsinites.”
Rep. Mark Pocan: “Trump’s unprecedented decision to suspend ALL federal grants, loans, & other financial aid will have a devastating impact on EVERY community across the country. Congress has the power of the purse. This blatantly unconstitutional order should not stand.”
Rep. Gwen Moore: “As a Head Start parent, I know how important funding child care programs for low income families is. Losing that access would force poor parents out of the workforce. Donald Trump doesn’t care about hardworking families and children in need.”
