MADISON, WI – Today, Governor Tony Evers delivered his State of the State address in the Assembly Chambers at the Wisconsin State Capitol. Representative Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) released the following statement:

“Tonight, Governor Evers came before the Legislature and the people of Wisconsin to announce his policy priorities for the upcoming year. It was my honor to be able to escort Governor Evers to the Assembly floor and listen to his plans and investments for addressing the most pressing issues facing residents of our state.

By declaring 2025 the Year of the Kid, Governor Evers has underscored our responsibility as a state to protect and support our children and our working families.

Children across our state today face a variety of challenges, including food insecurity, environmental contaminants in their drinking water, violence in their communities and schools, and mental health crises. As legislators and community leaders, it is time for us to take our kids’ wellbeing and future seriously.

Governor Evers has led the way by proposing historic investments in childcare, mental health services, public education, and community safety initiatives. I applaud the Governor for recognizing how critical these investments are to our kids’ growth and success and for continuing to put our children first in all his policy initiatives.

I am especially proud that, last week, Governor Evers signed Executive Order #254, creating the Office of Violence Prevention. I have advocated for the creation of such an office for years, and I look forward to seeing the positive impacts this initiative will have on reducing violence throughout the state.

Another critical investment Governor Evers has committed to making in the upcoming state budget is the investment of $66 million for the continued support of our crime victim services. The importance of ensuring that all victims of crime, especially those who are most vulnerable, receive the support they need to heal and recover, cannot be overstated.

After the tragic shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in my district earlier this winter, the need for common-sense public safety policy, including gun safety legislation, became an increasingly urgent priority. I thank Governor Evers for recognizing the need for measures that will save lives, including the new “Self-Assigned Firearm Exclusion” or “SAFE” program that will allow individuals experiencing mental health crises or thoughts of suicide to temporarily and voluntarily prevent themselves from purchasing a firearm. Governor Evers has also been very clear about the need for a 48-hour waiting period for the purchase of handguns and for universal background checks, measures that I have championed session after session in the Assembly.

Under Governor Evers’ leadership, Wisconsinites have seen taxes and unemployment decrease. We have seen incredible investments in our workforce, our growing clean energy sector, and our economy. We have seen the defense of reproductive rights and of the most vulnerable members of our community. We have come far, but we must continue working hard and working together to deliver policy that meets everyone’s needs.

I am proud to stand beside Governor Evers and continue introducing and passing legislation that promotes the safety, health, and well-being of every single person living in our state, especially our children. In the Year of the Kid, I look forward to working with the Governor and with my colleagues in the Legislature to build a Wisconsin that works for everyone.”
