Statement From Aldermanic Candidate Nas Musa

Rising Star Pledges to Lead From the Grassroots Up, Elevating City Services, Supporting Neighbors, and Tackling Racism

Nas Musa, candidate for Milwaukee’s District 3 alderman, has released
this statement:

“My campaign recently made social media posts and sent out a text message for a fundraiser:

‘If elected, I’ll proactively help root out bigotry. Whether anti-immigrant, anti-Jewish, anti-LGBTQ+, or anti-Muslim—we must abolish hate. I’m hosting a Hate Is a Drag – Brunch event today at noon at Casablanca Brady. My focus includes protecting bicyclists and our environment, expanding great housing options, creating more good jobs, proactively addressing violence, car theft, and reckless driving, fixing streets, broadening workers’ rights, and defending seniors and pro-choice values.’

While the vast majority of responses were positive and heartwarming, many others were filled with hateful, homophobic, and Islamophobic slurs, as well as unacceptable racist attacks. As a result of my team’s hard work and determination, our first campaign finance filing reported nearly double the fundraising totals of any other campaign in a wide field of candidates. Our campaign team does not deserve to endure the traumatic, misogynistic, homophobic, and racist attacks they have received simply for doing their job. Yet we remain undeterred and are planning another drag show event in solidarity with vulnerable communities nationwide.

Since knocking on thousands of doors starting last November and calling thousands of my neighbors, I have been humbled by the outpouring of support for my campaign. My family and volunteers are deeply thankful to our new District 3 friends who have spent their valuable time sharing their stories and thoughts about City Hall and city services. From traffic calming to proactive violence and crime reduction, to simple alley and sidewalk maintenance, to snow plowing urgency and a perception of high taxes—my District 3 neighbors are passionate about supporting city workers and maintaining high-quality municipal resources.

If I am fortunate enough to be elected, my paramount focus will be 24/7 support for my neighbors and elevating city services to their highest standards. Whether addressing lead pipe replacement, enhancing programs to assist small businesses, making smart sewer investments, or advocating for excellence and accountability in housing and public safety—nothing less than world-class services is acceptable. That’s how we attract new residents and business investments.

Car break-ins and vandalism can devastate a family or a small business. When MooSa’s Custard, our family business next to Bradford Beach and Lake Park, suffered a break-in, the shattered glass and destruction were overwhelming. Almost instantly, neighbors responded to our social media posts, and our late Alderman Jonathan Brostoff showed up to help us clean up and heal. I pledge to embody that same dedication and neighbor-driven philosophy. Mazen Muna, owner of Metro Car Wash, has endorsed and supported our campaign; he and his staff have helped thousands of Milwaukee car owners completely restore stolen vehicles filled with broken glass and worse. These are the stories and connections we need to share and emulate.

Considering today’s historic occasion – I strive to live a life in celebration of Dr. King and informed by the wisdom of his famous sermon:

‘So I want to turn your attention to this subject: “Loving Your Enemies.” It’s so basic to me because it is a part of my basic philosophical and theological orientation: the whole idea of love, the whole philosophy of love. In the fifth chapter of the Gospel as recorded by Saint Matthew, we read these very arresting words flowing from the lips of our Lord and Master: “Ye have heard that it has been said, ‘Thou shalt love thy neighbor and hate thine enemy.’ But I say unto you: Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them that despitefully use you, that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven.”

Certainly, these are great words—words lifted to cosmic proportions. And over the centuries, many have argued that this is an extremely difficult command. Many would go so far as to say that it just isn’t possible to move out into the actual practice of this glorious command. They would go on to say that this is just additional proof that Jesus was an impractical idealist who never quite came down to earth. So the arguments abound. But far from being an impractical idealist, Jesus has become the practical realist. The words of this text glitter in our eyes with new urgency. Far from being the pious injunction of a utopian dreamer, this command is an absolute necessity for the survival of our civilization. Yes, it is love that will save our world and our civilization—love even for enemies.’

Milwaukee is known for supporting workers and families, and fostering a culture of mutual respect. I hope to have the privilege to continue that legacy, being a practical realist – representing and caring for all regardless of their opinions or political stances.”
