As part of the Common Council meeting on Tuesday, December 17, local 3rd graders from Golda Meir School will participate in the Council meeting as the selected winners of the Alderperson for a Day essay contest. Created by Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs, and supported by the entire Common Council, Alderperson for a Day tasked the students with learning about local government and writing a short essay about the change they would enact within the community if they were an Alderperson for a day.

[inrticlead]“Engaging youth in local government and hearing their thoughts about the challenges they encounter, and the ideas they have to improve the city is important, and unfortunately sometimes overlooked,” said Alderwoman Coggs. “This program is designed to give these young people an outlet to share their thoughts directly with elected officials, while also learning from them and experiencing the legislative process in action. These are our future leaders, and we are thrilled to have them join Tuesday’s Council meeting.”

In addition to joining the Common Council meeting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, December 17, the contest winners will also participate in a talkback with Council members to discuss ways in which they would like to see the community improved. The group discussion will occur after the conclusion of the Common Council meeting.
