On Earth Day, Representative Lisa Subeck Proudly Stands Up for Wisconsin’s Natural Resources
Republican budget would do serious harm to our state’s outdoor heritage
MADISON – Today, Representative Lisa Subeck (D-Madison) celebrated Earth Day and pledged to protect the vital natural resources that have contributed to Wisconsin’s prosperity for generations. Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day in 1970, kicking off a series of critical environmental reforms that have helped preserve clean air, water, and land in Wisconsin and across the nation.
“On this day, I honor the Senator Gaylord Nelson’s legacy by continuing the fight to protect our vital natural resources and by standing up for the conservation traditions Senator Nelson worked so hard to preserve throughout his career,” Rep. Subeck said. “It is disgraceful that Governor Walker and legislative Republicans are pushing a budget that would do serious harm to Wisconsin’s outdoor heritage and undo the critical work done by citizens, environmental advocates, scientists, and elected officials like Senator Nelson.”
The Republican budget would decimate our successful Knowles-Nelson Stewardship program, eliminate 66 science and education positions at the Department of Natural Resources, increase fees for visitors to our state parks, and cut important recycling programs. A recent Public Opinion Strategies poll showed that nearly 90 percent of Wisconsin voters support continued investments in the Stewardship fund.
“We must work together to be treat our environment with respect and ensure future generations can enjoy all Wisconsin has to offer. I will continue the longstanding tradition in the 78th Assembly District of standing up for our natural resources by fighting the harm done to our environment by the governor’s proposed budget. I am committed to supporting responsible policies for the stewardship of our land, air, and water and to promoting additional investment in clean energy jobs for our state,” said Subeck. “That is why today I am calling on Governor Walker and my Republican legislative colleagues to remove provisions that harm our environment from their proposed state budget.”
