Senator Johnson Responds to Charges against Waupun Correctional Institution Staff

MADISON – In response to the charges filed against staff members at Waupun Correctional Institution, Senator LaTonya Johnson released the following statement:

“The deeply disturbing and unacceptable conditions revealed at Waupun Correctional Institution demand our immediate attention. Prisoners are human beings, and even during their incarceration, they deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.

“The charges highlight severe lapses in care and showcase a concerning lack of oversight over employees working within the Waupun prison system. My heart goes out to the families and friends of all four individuals who lost their lives during their periods of incarceration, especially to Donald Maier and Cameron Williams, whose deaths resulted in these heinous charges.

“While these revelations are shocking, we must allow the investigation to continue. If others are found to have violated their codes of conduct, they must also be held accountable. We await further findings and information from the ongoing investigations and will continue to advocate for justice and reform within our correctional system.

“Maintaining the safety and dignity of those in our care should be the highest priority of any correctional facility, and we must ensure that such failures are addressed and corrected. There must be accountability and justice for the failures that have occurred, so that we may prevent such tragedies from happening again.”

It’s about time that these injustices see the light of day. Thank you to all who have had the courage and persistence to make these charges possible.

And again When will they ever learn? The end to a Bob Dylan song YES when will we acknowledge that a significant number of folks are in need of therapy for the mental illness that they have The rest need therapy for the trauma that they experienced long before they were incarcerated. When will the ACLU go to court to demand the therapy they all need?????
