Gaudete Brass Quintet to Perform with Carthage Wind Orchestra in First Band Concert Reenactment

By - Feb 21st, 2024 11:22 am

KENOSHA, Wis. – Carthage College is thrilled to announce a collaboration between the Gaudete Brass Quintet and the Wind Orchestra. This unique performance is set to take place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at the A. F. Siebert Chapel as part of the Performing Arts Series.

The Carthage Bands will begin the concert with a historic re-creation of the first selections mentioned in the first year of performing as a six-member “brass band” in 1873. These will be combined with other pieces likely to have been heard in the early years of the group. To aid in authenticity, instruments dating from the time of the Civil War have been provided by the 1st Brigade Band of Watertown, Wisconsin, and will be used by the Gaudete Brass Quintet for their performance.

The Gaudete Brass Quintet is made up of five musicians who believe strongly in the expressive and communicative power of brass chamber music. Since 2004, the quintet has engaged in creatively expanding the brass quintet repertoire, developing unique programs that have resonated with chamber music audiences all over the country. In 2021, they began a project asking local Chicago composers to write a short piece celebrating something interesting or unique about their neighborhood. Ephraim Champion’s “South Shore Chicago” will be included in their program, which also includes music of Joan Tower, Reena Esmail and William Byrd.

Beginning with patriotic settings of “America” and Stephen Foster’s “Santa Ana’s Retreat from Buena Vista,” the Concert Band will also play Wilhelm Piefke’s “Düppler Schanzen Sturm” march from the first Carthage Band program. Selections from the first program, “Croquet Waltz” and “St. Louis Quickstep,” will then be played by the Gaudete Brass Quintet on the historic brass band instruments known as helicons. The groups will then combine for Charles Ives’ “Variations on Jerusalem the Golden” and Claudio Grafulla’s “Andante and Waltz.”

Join us on Wednesday, February 28, at the A. F. Siebert Chapel for an evening of artistic mastery.
