“Birth to 3” Budget Amendment Recommended for Adoption

MILWAUKEE – Yesterday, the Finance Committee approved Amendment 38 to the 2024 budget, which increases expenditures for the Department of Health and Human Services’ Birth to 3 Program funding. The author of the amendment, Supervisor Sequanna Taylor, issued the following statement:

“Investing in the well-being of our children from an early age not only benefits them but also the entire community. Early intervention can lead to better outcomes and a brighter future for these children, which, in turn, contributes to the overall health and prosperity of our county. We must prioritize the welfare of our youngest residents and ensure that they have equitable access to the services they need. I thank my colleagues on the County Board for their support of this amendment and this vital program.”

The Birth to 3 Program is designed for children ages birth to 3 years old who are suspected of having developmental delays that may indicate the need for early intervention services. This amendment provides a one-time appropriation of $250,000 to supplement current reimbursements to the three remaining local providers.

This budget amendment seeks to bridge the funding gap that local providers have been facing due to the surging demand for early intervention services locally and the reduction in available federal funding. By allocating this additional funding, the Department of Health and Human Services will be better equipped to continue serving the growing number of children and families who rely on the Birth to 3 Program.
