Tom DeMuth of Lighthouse Development gave Urban Milwaukee a tour of his company’s redevelopment of the former Transpak facility in Milwaukee’s Walker’s Point neighborhood. We’ve covered the South Water Works project before including the announcement of Fullhouse’s relocation there, their website launch (and renderings), and the start of redevelopment.

Love the concept of an “Urban Village” development. A sort of city-within-a-city, though probably not large enough to be entirely self supporting with all of the ammeneties of a complete mixed use neighborhood. I really hope the city implements traffic slowing measures on Pittsburgh. Even with the recent developments around, the northern portion of Walker’s Point is still sort of fly-by country with Pittsburgh and 1st street acting as highways through the area. The mixed use concept will ensure 24 hour activity and hopefully push out the car thieves on Barclay south of Pittsburgh. If you ever walk down this street, it has the most broken window glass of any street in Milwaukee!

@Jeremy H There is a street improvement associated with this project. Right at the turn in Pittsburgh the turn lane will be removed to create a small plaza for this project. There are other street improvement in discussion in the area as well…

Interesting bit of info: Biztimes reported today (11/26) that, “Columbia Sportswear Company leased 6,912 square feet of space in the Deco Building at South Water Works, located at the southeast corner of Pittsburgh and Barclay Street, Milwaukee from Lighthouse Development Company, LLC.”

Pretty cool if this is going to be Columbia retail store. This will add to the short list of unique destination retailers locating in urban Milwaukee, and may begin to spread Milwaukee’s “fashion district” across the river, though not sure if Columbia is considered “fashionable” when talking in the same “fashionable” terms as the shops along Broadway.
