Marquette University develops accelerated STEM-MBA program

MILWAUKEE – Marquette University today announced a new STEM-MBA, a unique accelerated degree program for undergraduate students in selected science, technology and mathematics majors. It will be available beginning in the fall 2015 semester.

The five-year program – the first of its kind in the area and one of only a few nationwide – provides students the opportunity to receive both a bachelor’s degree in their chosen major and a Master of Business Administration degree from Marquette’s Graduate School of Management.

“This new degree program is a direct response to employer needs in science and technology fields,” said Dr. Jeanne Simmons, associate dean of the Graduate School of Management. “The program combines the technical expertise of the science degree with the practical business knowledge of the MBA, a combination that will make our graduates even more appealing in the competitive job market.”

“The STEM-MBA will allow us to graduate liberal arts educated scientists with strong business and management skills,” said Rick Holz, dean of the Helen Way Klingler College of Arts and Sciences. “Not only does it bolster their job prospects, but it positions them to be future ethical leaders in diverse scientific companies and businesses.”

Under the new program, undergraduates will begin graduate-level coursework toward the MBA in their senior year. In the event that students decide not to complete the fifth year and earn their MBA, the program is structured so that they may still achieve a minor in business administration.

“The STEM-MBA is a great example of leveraging interdisciplinary resources across programs in order to provide unique and valuable offerings for our students,” said Dr. Margaret Callahan, interim provost. “The program offers existing courses, but packages them in a way that is most beneficial for students who wish to pursue this accelerated track.”

In order to be considered for the STEM-MBA, applicants should note their interest when applying for admission to Marquette, and must formally apply to the Graduate School of Management during their junior year.
