Hundreds of Volunteers to Join City Year Milwaukee for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service
Mandela Barnes, Superintendent Driver, Julia A. Uihlein will join volunteers to beautify Milwaukee Public Schools’ Washington High School of Information Technology
On Monday, January 19, more than 500 volunteers will join City Year Milwaukee for a day of service to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
City Year, a national organization that unites teams of young people for a year of service in high-need urban schools, mobilizes its 2,800 AmeriCorps members nationwide and thousands more volunteers each MLK Day to beautify and revitalize communities and schools. Traditionally, City Year considers the holiday a day “on,” not “off.”
On MLK Day, City Year Milwaukee will have 120 staff and corps members working with an expected 500 volunteers to beautify Milwaukee Public Schools’ Washington High School of Information Technology with over 150 murals and a number of carpentry projects. The murals are meant to engage and inspire, and include historical figures, quotes, academic images, and college logos.
Every day is a day of service for City Year Milwaukee AmeriCorps members. Our 85 corps members serve full-time throughout the school year at nine local schools as tutors, mentors, and role models for students who face the greatest risk of dropping out. Across the country, service days provide an opportunity for volunteers and corps members to help make schools a place where students want to learn, from creating inspiring murals, to building outdoor classrooms, to painting and revitalized school halls, cafeterias and gymnasiums.
This day of service is sponsored by JPMorgan Chase and the Milwaukee Bucks.
