Press Release

The time for waiting is over

After years of discussing the possibility of the City of Milwaukee suing Kia and Hyundai for their culpability in making vehicles without adequate anti-theft systems, it is now past time for action.

That fact has been elevated in recent days, as to its credit, the Madison Common Council approved a resolution Tuesday (March 7) that authorizes the City of Madison to hire a Seattle-based law firm to file a federal lawsuit against Kia and Hyundai.

Madison officials allege – just as we do – that Kia and Hyundai are at least partly to blame because they failed to equip all their vehicles made between 2011 and 2021 with engine immobilizers and other standard anti-theft features. The resolution approved in Madison notes that the rash of thefts there (like in Milwaukee) has consumed police resources, cost taxpayers money and endangered the public.

It is time for the City of Milwaukee – ground zero for where many of these issues began – to join the growing number of cities by filing suit against Kia and Hyundai.
