MPD to discuss measures to ensure public safety in district facilities

On Thursday (March 10), the Public Safety and Health Committee will discuss with Milwaukee Police Department representatives policies and procedures to ensure that police facilities are safe for employees and the public.

Common Council file #211803– sponsored by Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs – will be taken up by the Public Safety and Health Committee at 9:00 am on Thursday (March 10).

Alderwoman Coggs has raised concerns over the safety of employees and the public inside MPD’s district offices in light of the February 25 shots fired incident inside the District 5 police station near 4th and Locust. The shooting – reportedly by a man who was suffering a mental health emergency (and who was also shot by officers after he ran from the scene) – is yet another reminder of the importance of ensuring stronger safety measures for employees and the public.

“The public and police officers have important points of contact inside our MPD district stations daily, and it is important for everyone’s safety to make sure those facilities are secure and as welcoming as possible, and it is important to the Council that measures be taken by the Milwaukee Police Department to guarantee general safety for city employees and the public,” she said.

Thursday’s Public Safety and Health Committee meeting will be televised live on the City Channel (channel 25 on Spectrum Cable and channel 99 on AT&T U-Verse in the City of Milwaukee) and via streaming video on the city website at city.milwaukee.gov/Channel25.
