Milwaukee Health Department to Offer Extended Use of Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 Vaccines

MILWAUKEE – Following FDA and CDC approval, the Milwaukee Health Department will expand the administration of the booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines at all COVID-19 clinics beginning immediately. The updated emergency use authorization (EUA):
- Expands the use of a single booster dose to include use in individuals 12 through 15 years of age.
- Shortens the time between the completion of primary vaccination of either mRNA series (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna) COVID-19 Vaccine and a booster dose to at least five months.
- Allows for a third primary series dose for certain immunocompromised children 5 through 11 years of age.
Beginning Monday, individuals 12 years of age and older can visit the Northwest Health Center, Southside Health Center, or Menomonee Valley Site for their booster dose when eligible. Hours and locations available at Milwaukee.gov/covidvax.
In addition to the booster doses, children 5 through 11 years of age who have undergone solid organ transplantation, or who have been diagnosed with conditions that are considered to have an equivalent level of immunocompromise, may not respond adequately to the two-dose primary vaccination series and are authorized for a third dose. At this time, children 5 to 11 who are not immunocompromised do not need a third dose. Parents are encouraged to speak to their trusted pediatrician to determine if their child needs a third dose.
“With the dominant presence of the Omicron variant in our community, it’s more important than ever for individuals to get vaccinated and boostered as soon as they are eligible,” said Milwaukee Health Commissioner Kirsten Johnson. “Vaccines are the best tool we have to keep our community healthy, and this approval by the FDA and CDC brings us one step closer to a fully-protected city.”
