City of Milwaukee Weekly COVID-19 Update

MILWAUKEE – The disease burden in the City of Milwaukee this week declined to 242.8 new positive COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people over seven days and remains in the “excessive transmission” category. The percentage of positive COVID-19 tests decreased once again to 8.3% and remains in the “substantial transmission” category.

“These numbers, while still higher than we want to see, are on a three-week decline,” said Health Commissioner Kirsten Johnson. “If we want this trend to continue, it is imperative we get every Milwaukee resident vaccinated and be diligent about following safety guidelines, such as masking in public, avoiding large gatherings, washing our hands, and practicing physical distancing.”

Currently, 57.4% of City of Milwaukee adult residents over the age of 16 are fully vaccinated and 62.6% have received at least one dose.

Next week, the mobile vaccination team will be at multiple Seton Catholic Schools, including St. Margaret Mary School, Catholic East Elementary, Our Lady Queen of Peace School, and St. Roman School to vaccinate any students, staff, family members, or community members. Beginning Monday, October 18, COVID-19 vaccines will be available at the new Menomonee Valley drive-thru site. The new site, located at 2401 W. St. Paul Avenue, will have COVID-19 testing, COVID-19 vaccines, and flu vaccines available Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 12 to 6 p.m. and Tuesday, Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Flu shots are also currently available at the Northwest Health Center and Southside Health Center during their normal COVID-19 vaccine hours: Monday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 12 to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Per CDC guidance, co-administration of the COVID-19 vaccine and flu vaccine during the same visit is completely safe. Individuals six month of age and older are recommended to receive their flu vaccine before the end of October. More information about the flu vaccine can be found at Milwaukee.gov/flu.

The FDA advisory panel met this week and unanimously approved a booster dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine with the same qualifications as the current Pfizer booster dose and the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine for individuals 18 and over who previously received the single-dose vaccine. The CDC vaccine advisors will meet next week to discuss next steps, and the Milwaukee Health Department will follow this guidance once it is announced.
