Home Craft Day – Celebrating Milwaukee’s Refugee Communities

Outdoor Market Features Crafts and Other Goods from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Indigenous Makers, September 18

By - Sep 13th, 2021 04:21 pm

This year, we are offering HOME 2021, our celebration of Milwaukee’s refugee communities, as a series of dispersed events spanning the summer. These outdoor festivities conclude with HOME Craft Day on Saturday, September 18, 2021, from 11 am to 4 pm. The Craft Market takes place on the grounds of the Lynden Sculpture Garden, 2145 West Brown Deer Road, Milwaukee, WI 53217. Admission is free.

At this craft market, our second of the summer, the public is invited to browse, shop, and support crafts and goods from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Indigenous makers. Goods range from native beadwork, handcrafted jewelry, and pottery to Malaysian treats; clothes, foods, and watercolors from Myanmar; African dolls and hair wraps; papier-maché sculptures and other Mexican crafts; Ethiopian spices; Hmong handmade hair accessories; new and used multilingual books from La Revo Books; handmade Tanzanian clothing, fabric, and accessories; and natural herbal and skincare products from Rumaneh Nourish and Yenepa Herbals.

For an updated list of vendors for the final market, check out our website here.

Members of the Burmese community will be selling traditional foods for lunch and snacks with proceeds benefiting their families and the local community in Milwaukee.

Saturday is also Lynden’s monthly dog day, so if your dog has a nose for crafts, bring them along. Dogs must be leashed and mindful of other humans and dogs.

Organized by the Refugee Steering Committee with Lynden’s Community Engagement Specialist, Kim Khaira, these HOME events take place outdoors on Lynden’s grounds. We hope that these events, when taken together, will capture the spirit of art, food, and performance that we experienced at the HOME 2019 outdoor festival. We invite you to come to the table and to leave with your bellies and hearts full.

About HOME
The HOME Refugee Steering Committee is building a space of leading, coming together, and celebrating refugees. In 2019, we were able to realize our vision for HOME 2019 as a community-directed outdoor festival on World Refugee Day. Over 1,000 refugee community members and members of the public filled Lynden’s grounds. In 2020, we launched the HOME virtual platform to archive our past work and to house our new, year-round HOME programming. In 2021, we are offering HOME as a series of dispersed events spanning the summer. We thank our community sponsors Hanan Refugee Relief Group, Engage Workforce Solutions, and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield.

About the Lynden Sculpture Garden
The Lynden operates as a laboratory at the intersection of art, nature, and culture. Since opening to the public in 2010, we have worked with artists, educators, students, and our community to create, support, and share experiences that integrate our collection of more than 50 monumental sculptures and temporary installations, Lynden’s community of artists, and the natural ecology of our 40-acre site. The sculpture garden is open to art and nature lovers of all ages daily, 10 am-5 pm; closed Thursdays. Thanks to the generosity of the Herzfeld Foundation and other donors, admission is currently waived. Learn more about visitor guidelines here: https://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/visit. Annual memberships are also available.
