Rep. Robyn Vining Will Continue Advocating for What’s Best for Wisconsin Kids & What’s Best for Our State

MADISON – Today, Governor Evers signed the 2021-2023 Biennial State Budget bill into law as Wisconsin Act 58 and used his partial veto authority to adjust or remove 50 provisions in the budget passed by the Wisconsin State Legislature. State Representative Robyn Vining (D-Wauwatosa) issued the following statement in response:

“Governor Evers stated today that this budget isn’t good enough for our kids, and Republicans could and should have done more, and that while they might be fine forcing Wisconsinites across the state to go to referenda just to support their public schools, he is not. I wholeheartedly agree, and I appreciate his commitment to providing the necessary resources to our schools by allocating an additional $100 million of federal funds to our K-12 schools.

“Republicans in the Legislature presented a false choice between investing in our schools – in our students and our classrooms – and providing a tax cut to the people of Wisconsin. As I said on the Assembly floor, the state is in a financial position to do both, and so we should.

“Governor Evers’ proposed budget showed us what is possible for Wisconsin, by focusing on investments in our communities and addressing the issues facing our state. While Republican legislators rejected the governor’s plan and failed to provide what Wisconsinites and schools have been asking for, we know that more funding is still needed to avoid budget cuts and layoffs over the next two years. It is fiscally irresponsible to play political games with the taxpayer’s dollar.

“We have big news that Governor Evers’ partial veto puts the legislature in a position to invest in Wisconsinites’ priorities, with an additional $550 million in the state’s general fund. After watching Republicans fail to sufficiently fund our schools, we have before us an opportunity to try again. It is my hope that Republicans have heard the backlash from their budget falling short – heard loud and clear the will of the people – and that they will come to the table with Wisconsin values in mind, and fund the schools. The budget may have been signed, and it may be summer, but there remains work to be done. I’m ready to continue to work on what’s best for our kids and our state. Forward together.”
