COVID-19 Active Hospitalizations Hit New High, Positive Case Rate Above 30%
The lowest death total in 37 days pushes daily average off record high.
The number of people actively hospitalized with a confirmed case of COVID-19 in Wisconsin hit a new high on Monday.
The Wisconsin Hospital Association reported 1,614 people are actively hospitalized with a confirmed case of the disease. The total is up 114 in the past 24 hours and 298 since last week. Thirty days ago the total stood at 714.
The Department of Health Services reported 100 people were newly hospitalized in the past 24 hours in its daily data release. A total of 11,597 people have required hospitalization since the outbreak began, 1,181 in the past week.
The seven-day positive case rate, the percentage of tests that confirm a new case of the disease, stands at 31.26%, a record high. The 14-day average set a low of 2.69% on June 19th.
Officials have looked for the positive case rate to trend downward to indicate a slowing spread of disease and sufficient testing. Multiple public health benchmarks call for the positive case rate figure to be sustained under five percent.
A record 31,247 Wisconsin residents have tested positive for the disease in the past week. Since the pandemic began 232,296 people have tested positive.
A record 13 patients are in the Alternate Care Facility in West Allis.
DHS reported three deaths Monday, the lowest total in 37 days. A total of 2,050 Wisconsin residents have died as a result of the virus, including 594 in Milwaukee County. Officials confirmed Tuesday that the total includes only people where a medical examiner determined the disease was a contributing factor in the death.
Since September, Milwaukee County has gone from having the worst per-capita outbreak to the 17th worst in the state, even as its case and hospitalization load has surged to record levels.
Menominee County has recorded 7,850.3 cases per 100,000 residents (no change). Shawano County has recorded 6,502.7 cases per 100,000 residents (up from 6,560.8). Brown, Oconto, Kewaunee, Winnebago, Calumet, Langlade, Forest, Dodge, Outagamie, Fond du Lac, Florence, Waupaca, Marinette, and Sheboygan counties are the remaining counties leading Milwaukee.
According to DHS data, 4,661.7 out of every 100,000 Milwaukee County residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since the outbreak began (up from 4,603.8).
The statewide average of cases per 100,000 residents rose to 4,018.2 (up from 3,958.8). Wisconsin has recorded a per-capita rate of 891.7 cases per 100,000 residents in the past two weeks according to the DHS activity level report released Wednesday.
