Over 10,000 Wisconsin Residents Have Been Hospitalized With COVID-19
Four out of every 100 Milwaukee County residents have contracted disease, but county falls to 13th in all-time ranking.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported Friday afternoon that 183 people were newly hospitalized with a confirmed case of COVID-19. The one-day total, the second-highest on record, pushes the all-time total to 10,038.
While the pandemic has been ongoing since March in Wisconsin, 32 percent of the state’s hospitalizations have occurred in the past 30 days.
Active hospitalizations hit a record high Friday, 1,243. A month ago the total was 509.
The hospitalizations come as a surge of cases that started in early September continues to accelerate. DHS reported 4,378 new cases Friday, the second-highest one-day total on record. A record average of 3,470 cases per day have been reported over the past week.
The death toll from the virus continues to accelerate alongside cases and hospitalizations. DHS reported 42 deaths Friday, the second-highest one-day total. The latest data release pushed the 30-day average to a record 16.20 deaths per day, up from 5.93 a month ago.
Milwaukee County has also gone from having the worst per-capita outbreak on a case basis to the 13th worst over the past month, even as its case and hospitalization load has surged to record levels.
Menominee County has recorded 6,230 cases per 100,000 residents (up from 5,864.9). Brown County has recorded 5,480.5 cases per 100,000 residents (up from 5,364.7). Shawano, Oconto, Calumet, Kewaunee, Winnebago, Forest, Outagamie, Florence. Waupaca and Langlade counties are the remaining counties leading Milwaukee.
According to DHS data, 4,011.4 out of every 100,000 Milwaukee County residents have tested positive for COVID-19 since the outbreak began (up from 3,913.6).
The statewide average of cases per 100,000 residents rose to 3,294.9 (up from 3,219.1). Wisconsin has recorded a per-capita rate of 760.9 cases per 100,000 residents in the past two weeks according to the DHS activity level report released Wednesday.
