2,533 Cases, 25% Jump To New Record
Totals just keep climbing higher as cases surge at university campuses across Wisconsin.
Fresh off eclipsing 2,000 cases for the first time, Wisconsin set another new high for COVID-19 cases in a 24-hour period.
The Department of Health Services reported 2,533 new cases Friday afternoon, eclipsing the Thursday total of 2,034.
It’s the fourth time in nine days the state has set a new high.
The new cases come from 13,067 processed tests, the highest total since August 9th. As a result, the number of tests processed in the past seven days has climbed to 72,253, the highest total since August 15th. A high of 99,920 was recorded for the week ending August 6th.
And while testing isn’t at an all-time high, cases are. The seven-day case total hit 11,029. The high before September brought a surge of cases with it was 6,512 for the week of July 26th.
Officials have looked for the positive case rate to trend downward to indicate a slowing spread of disease and sufficient testing. Multiple public health benchmarks call for the positive case figure to be sustained under five percent. During an appearance before the Milwaukee Press Club, last Wednesday Governor Tony Evers called the five percent figure a “golden target” and encouraged more people to get tested.
A lagging indicator of the disease’s spread, hospitalizations, is again trending upward.
A total of 342 Wisconsin residents are actively hospitalized with a confirmed case of the disease according to the Wisconsin Hospital Association COVID-19 dashboard. The figure is down five from Thursday and up 16 from a week ago. DHS reports that 47 people were newly hospitalized in the past 24 hours, bringing the outbreak total to 6,569.
Seven deaths were reported by DHS, bringing the statewide total to 1,238. There have been 521 deaths recorded in Milwaukee County. An average of 5.93 deaths per day have been reported across the state over the past 30 days.
According to DHS data, 2,795.4 out of every 100,000 Milwaukee County residents have tested positive for COVID-19 (up from 2,766.4) since the outbreak began. Brown County has recorded 2,759.2 cases per 100,000 residents (up from 2,693). Iron County, the northernmost county that borders Michigan, has 2,327.2 cases per 100,000 residents (no change).
Walworth (2,313.5), Racine (2,242.3), Forest (2,123.7), La Crosse (2,007) and Kenosha (1,911.7) are the only other counties with more than 1,800 cases per 100,000 residents.
The statewide average of cases per 100,000 residents rose to 1,682.7 (up from 1,638.9). Wisconsin has recorded a per-capita rate of 269.6 per 100,000 in the past two weeks according to the DHS activity level report released Wednesday.
A total of 97,279 residents have tested positive for the disease.
