Statement on Mexican Independence Day
Today people across the globe are celebrating Mexican Independence Day, and as the first Mexican-American woman to serve on the Milwaukee Common Council I am honored to recognize Mexican Independence Day here in our city.
For more than a century Mexican culture has been a part of Milwaukee and has added to the diversity, rich heritage and social fabric of our city. The support and influence of Mexican immigrants played a key role in making Milwaukee the first-class city we all call home today.
So while we are not able to celebrate in the same fashion this year, I encourage everyone to take a moment and reflect on all the ways in which Mexican culture has brightened and enhanced our community.
