The Salvation Army Continues Providing Food For Healthcare Workers

Nearly 2,000 meals will be dropped off at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center

MILWAUKEE – In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Salvation Army of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan has been providing meals to healthcare workers at several different hospitals and clinics in Milwaukee as part of its Helping Hands for Healthcare Heroes Feeding Initiative.

Since March 27, the Salvation Army canteen (mobile feeing truck) has been stationed at Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital, multiple Progressive Community Health Center Clinics, and multiple 16th Street Community Health Center Clinics. About 1,280 meals have been served since then.

“With the increased number of cases throughout Milwaukee County, many frontline healthcare workers have limited food choices and at times, work straight through their lunch and/or dinner breaks and have had little nourishment,” said Major Steve Woodard, Milwaukee County Coordinator. “Meals made by Salvation Army staff include a sandwich, chips, cookie and water.”

On Tuesday, April 21, at 10 a.m. The Salvation Army will be dropping off 1,500 meals at the Milwaukee VA Medical Center, as a thank you to the hospital staff for their hard work fighting COVID-19.  This is in addition to the 400 meals served to Milwaukee VA night shift workers on Thursday, April 16. Sandwiches to the VA are provided by Jimmy Johns, The Valley Inn and Rise & Grind Cafe.
