Mayor Barrett Reasserts His Invitation to Host the 2020 G7 Meetings

“I want world leaders to see how international trade practices can affect local economies like Milwaukee’s.”

MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett continues his effort to get President Donald Trump to host the Group of 7 (G7) meeting of world leaders in Milwaukee next June.

The Mayor wrote to the President on Sunday recommending our city as the site for the gathering — pointing out that America’s Fresh Coast is an ideal location to highlight impacts from world forces on the U.S. economy. While this country has hosted a number of G7 gatherings, no G7 meeting has ever taken place in the Midwest.

Late Sunday, a Special Assistant to the President in the White House Intergovernmental Affairs office acknowledged receipt of the Mayor’s invitation with the assurance it was being shared with the appropriate people in Washington.

Today, at the Mayor’s direction, his staff reached out to both the Wisconsin Center District and Visit Milwaukee to continue discussions about the possibility of hosting the G7 next year.

“I want world leaders to see how international trade practices can affect local economies like Milwaukee’s,” Mayor Barrett said. “Even more importantly, I want to tell Milwaukee’s story. We’re a community that is changing, reinventing our economy with innovation, investment, and technology.”
